Painting Rocks at Rock Creek

I painted this the other day down at Rock Creek in Red Lodge, MT.  I think it may have been one of the most difficult scenes I have ever chosen. One of the hardest things about painting outdoors is having a time limit on making sense of the infinite information that we see in front of us.

With just 2 or 3 hours to paint, the struggle with this painting was getting the rocks to look like rocks without taking hours and hours to render each Rock.
I’m not sure I succeeded but I did give it my best shot!

This next week I will be taking a workshop from Joshua Clare in Bozeman, MT.  It is always fun to learn from different artists and to experiment with different ways of making a painting.  Check back soon for some very different stuff from me!
